The Orange Boat

Christmas memories aboard MS Rogaland

14. Dec 2019 KL. 14:00 - 14:15

Stavanger Maritime Museum and MS Rogaland invite you to get into the Christmas spirit with memories of old Stavanger aboard the "Orange boat". But why the name? Orange boat?

Back in the days, oranges wasn't something you could get in the stores all year round. It was uncommon and considered quite exclusive and more over a thing the kids would get for christmas. When the ships arrived from North America before the holidays it became custom that someone on board the ship dressed up as a Santa Claus and handed out oranges to the kids greeting the ship from the pier. Over time, some kids would even name the Norwegian America Line ships "orange boats".

Today, the ships sailing to and from The United States are all history, but to bring the old memories alive Stavanger Maritime Museum and MS Rogaland invite you onboard the veteran ship from 1929 to revive the local custom of the oranges. Maybe you'll meet Santa? And maybe you'll get an orange from him?
