The Maritime Foyer

Ship bells and a view of the wharf.

Stavanger Maritime Museum is in the heart of the city, a few steps from the waterfront. The museum tells the story of how the herring trade, maritime activity, shipbuilding, canning and today’s oil industry have built and dominated the city’s economy. The exhibitions are located in warehouses dating back to 1770-1840, and in Stavanger’s best-preserved merchant building.

The foyer, which also functions as a café and museum shop, is at street level and has large windows facing onto the harbour, with pedestrians, swans, the sea and fish market just outside. There’s ample space here for a pleasant supper party, breakfast meeting, lecture or reception.

The locale is well-lit, representative and modern. A presentation of the museum, its galleries and the cultural-historical landscape just beyond the threshold are a natural part of the experience for anyone who participates in a meeting or lecture at Stavanger Maritime Museum. Dare we suggest a sailor’s quiz?
